More on the fast growing Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae tree: Green Giant (Thuja Plicata x Standishii.) Arborvitae, 1998 winner of The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Gold Medal Plant Award, grows to 40 feet with a broad pyramidal habit. Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae is a fast growing evergreen tree, deer-resistant, aromatic, and is used for wind breaks, Christmas trees, or as a distinctive specimen. Its growth habits are similar to Leyland Cypress. Once established, expect about Green Giant Arborvitae to grow at least 3 feet per year. Thuja Green Giants do great in the South, but have a farther reach North than Leyland Cypress. Zone 5 - 8. They tend to bronze a bit in the winter, but green back beautifully in the Spring. Landscape Architects are beginning to use fast growing Thuja Green Giant Arborvitae trees instead of Leyland Cypress because they are resistant to the fungus (Cerosporidium sequoiae) that is damaging Leylands. |
