BEFORE DIGGING, call your local utilities to identify the location of any underground utilities.

These plants do not require a very big hole, but if your ground is hard, loosen it up as much as possible so the roots will have easy access to grow.

Abies Firma

Known as Japanese Fir, Momi Fir, or Dixie Fir

Japanese Momi Fir is not a fast growing tree and you would not want to use it as screen if you
need something quick. Momi fir is a wonderful specimen tree, though. One that should be gracing more Southern Gardens. Imagine! A healthy fir in zones 8 & 9!  It also is cold hardy down to zone 6.

New Research:  Japanese Momi Fir is coming to the rescue of many Fraser Fir Christmas tree growers in NC.  Fraser Fir and other firs have become quite susceptible to Phytopthora (a root rot disease).  Now, because of it's strong, disease resistant root system, growers are beginning to graft Fraser onto Momi rootstock.  The results seem positive with some evidence that Frasers may actually grow faster once grafted to this hardy Japanese fir.
