Loropetalum

Loropetalum, also known as Chinese Fringe-flower, is our very favorite family of evergreen shrubs.  Loropetalum grows well in full sun to partial shade areas.  For those needing an evergreen privacy screen in a shady area, Loropetalum might be the best choice.  There is a Loropetalum variety & size for every landscape need.

Loropetalum "Zhuzhou" grows 10' - 12' tall and around 8' - 10' wide.  Prune lightly to create more density or form a small tree by removing lower branches.  "Ruby" Loropetalum is too small for a privacy screen but makes a beautiful hedge or focal point.   On both "Ruby" & "Zhuzhou", the ruby-purplish foliage contrasts wonderfully with more conventional green shrubs & trees.

Loropetalum "Ruby" & "Zhuzhou" both feature dark maroon-colored leaves.  The whole plant is covered in brilliant deep pink tassel-shaped flowers in the spring (see picture above).  The flowers continue to show up sporadically throughout the year culminating with another decent showing in the fall.

BEFORE DIGGING, call your local utilities to identify the location of any underground utilities.

These plants do not require a very big hole, but if your ground is hard, loosen it up as much as possible so the roots will have easy access to grow.
